SharePoint backups

We were recently asked about a backup strategy for their SharePoint:

“I wondered if I could tap your expertise for some advice on a backup strategy for our Sharepoint Intranet site. Is Vmware alone reliable enough? Is it only reliable if all the services (web, application and db) are backed up and kept in sync or can we backup the database server separately and  restore (if necessary) alone? Should we be using the Central Admin backup facility in addition to VMware? Should we be considering a third party, more granular backup too?”

Our view is that any intranet that is used regularly should have a ‘proper’ backup solution. VMware is great, in as much as you can restore the entire environment onto a temporary farm, extract the bit you lost, copy it over to the live farm then spin it down – much better than if you have native tin.
