SharePoint is an outstanding tool for intranets and extranets. It is also a viable option for many websites, providing powerful content management, sophisticated workflow, rich options for interaction with web users and excellent integration with line of business applications.
Microsoft SharePoint for Internet Sites (SharePoint FIS) is a special license for this purpose, which allows multiple web sites to be hosted on a server farm and allows public access without the need for every user to have a licence. FIS can be an expensive and complex technology if a simple site is needed (we have other options for this), however it is a great solution where multiple web sites are desired and where advanced web 2.0 features are desired.
